At MWC this year I was very glad to see a couple of projector phones on show, this feature makes a lot of sense and there are loads of applications for this. Not only watching moviesĀ but business presentations and then if you couple a small bluetooth keyboard you can project your desktop etc. etc.
So let’s have a look at them. First up is NTT Docomo’s offering, they were showing two versions. First the chunky working prototype and then the slim and sleek model of how it will eventually look.
They’ve tried to camouflage the just how chunky the prototype is as it’s black against black but it is a few cm deep. The projected picture is ok but washed out, I guess to demo in a brightly lit area is hard and it is a prototype.
Below is how they anticipate it will look when launched. So full marks for effort but still a way away from full marks for achievement.
Next up is the slightly better performing and sleeker looking projector phone from Texas Instruments. Better projected picture than the Docomo and not in a darkened corner.
Both should launch this year. All in all seeing these was a welcome diversion from the general lack of innovation and forward thinking from more mainstream manufacturers.
